Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Overview

A Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is a type of electron microscope that produces images of a sample by scanning its surface with a focused beam of electrons at high magnifications. The electrons interact with atoms in the sample, generating various signals that contain information about the surface topography and composition. The maximum magnification achievable by this instrument is up to 50,000x, depending on the sample type.

SEM-EDS Analysis
SEM-EDS is a surface analysis technique that combines Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). SEM-EDS is used to identify elements within a sample and create elemental mapping.

Sample Preparation for Testing

• Suitable for liquid, fresh tissue, or wet samples such as leaves and microbes.
• Pathogenic bacteria samples must be sent in a 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution for microscopy.
• Provide details in the service request description, including sample type, three desired magnifications, and the number of EDS points required (e.g., magnifications: 1000x, 5000x, 10,000x with EDS 1-point Mapping).
• Attach the Test Detail Form along with reference images (printed) when sending the sample.
