ELAC SeaBeam 1180 Description
The SeaBeam 1180 is a multibeam echo sounder system that collects bathymetry and sidescan data in very shallow waters, with a narrow beam angle of up to 1.5 x 1.5 degrees and a swath width of over 150 degrees. The system is ideal for surveys requiring performance from shallow waters down to 600 meters, as well as in areas with extreme sedimentation such as rivers and harbors, research institutions, and land survey operations.
The SeaBeam 1180 offers seafloor coverage of over 900 meters with a maximum depth of 600 meters. During transmission and reception, the SeaBeam 1180 offers fully roll-stabilized beamforming, with extremely precise beam directionality in both along-track and across-track directions. Side lobe suppression of 36 dB with very low error rates was achieved.

Technical Description
Two narrow beam transducer arrays emit signals almost simultaneously into directional sectors with a high acoustic transmission rate. The receiving beamformer forms narrow beams in each sector with a beam width of 1.5° (using phase calculation) and a signal spacing of 1.25°. A complete fan consists of a total of 126 beams.
The high operating frequency of 180 kHz and the small size of the transducers provide two main advantages: wide coverage area and narrow beam angle.
The use of preformed beams ensures excellent side lobe suppression and very low error rates. This has a positive effect on measurement accuracy and provides a major advantage over one-way methods, such as transmission and reception without a specific direction.
Data acquisition and system control are carried out using a high-performance Windows-based personal computer. The SeaBeam 1180 system takes into account the influence of the sound speed profile on the propagation of sound signals in water using a ray tracing algorithm based on the actual measured sound speed profile.
