It is commonly used for field surveys or outdoor activities in remote areas beyond the reach of mobile phone signals. It also serves as a vital communication tool for search and rescue (SAR) teams and volunteers during disaster relief operations—such as in the wake of earthquakes, floods, or volcanic eruptions—when telecommunications infrastructure or cellular base stations (BTS) are rendered inoperable.
