The function of the Integrating Sphere is to spatially integrate the radiation flux. It's important to understand how integration balls work. How light passes through a sphere begins with a discussion of diffuse reflecting surfaces. From this, the inner surface radiance of the integrated sphere is derived and two related sphere parameters are discussed, spherical multiplier and mean reflectance. Finally, the time constant of the integration sphere as presented is relevant to applications involving fast pulsed or short-lived radiant energy.
