Description of Activities: The Genetic Conservation, Cryoconservation and Aquatic Forensics (KGKFA) Kelris aims to map the genetic diversity of endangered Indonesian fish species, develop cryoconservation techniques for the preservation of semen, oocytes and fish embryos to serve as a reference for the development of in-situ and ex-situ conservation of aquatic resources, and use forensic techniques to assess incidents or crimes related to aquatic resources. Aquatic resources include the environment and biological resources in the aquatic environment, both in marine, brackish and inland water ecosystems. The KGKFA centres focus on three research areas, namely 1) genetic science using DNA fingerprinting, DNA barcoding, DNA metabarcoding, gene expression, and whole genomics techniques, 2) cryoconservation science with techniques to identify the suitability of extender materials and cryoprotectants for semen storage, oocytes and fish embryos, and 3) aquatic forensics tries to fill conservation research with forensic techniques to assess incidents or crimes related to aquatic resources using molecular, stable isotope, proteomic, lipidomic, chromatographic, and other innovative techniques. Our ultimate goal is to ensure the long-term benefits of aquatic resources for the well-being of society.
Activity Form: Internship/Work Practice (Non-Research)
Scope of Activities: Laboratory-based research activities using molecular genetics approaches (DNA barcoding and DNA metabarcoding). Includes sample preparation, DNA extraction, DNA amplification, QC, sequencing preparation and bioinformatics analysis.
