This 6-month undergraduate internship program offers students the opportunity to engage in an applied research project focused on identifying potential locations for developing Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWT) in the southern coastal waters of Java. This region presents significant offshore wind energy potential due to its direct exposure to the Indian Ocean; however, it also poses geophysical risks, including earthquakes, tsunamis, and extreme meteorological and oceanographic conditions.
During the program, interns will be involved in collecting, processing, and analysing met-ocean data (wind, wave, current), bathymetry, and disaster risk indicators to develop a spatial suitability map for FOWT deployment. The research combines technical, environmental, and spatial modelling approaches, making it suitable for students from multidisciplinary backgrounds in engineering and marine science.
Interns will participate in research discussions, hands-on modelling, technical writing, and final presentations. The final output will include spatial maps of potential FOWT sites and recommendations to support national renewable energy planning.
Internship Objectives
  1. To provide students with hands-on research experience in the field of marine-based renewable energy.
  2. To enhance students’ skills in spatial analysis, met-ocean data processing, and disaster risk assessment for offshore infrastructure.
  3. To produce technical reports and spatial maps identifying suitable FOWT locations along the southern coast of Java.
  4. To promote cross-disciplinary collaboration between engineering, marine science, and spatial planning students.
Intern Requirements
  • Undergraduate students (minimum 6th semester) from:
    • Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, Renewable Energy, Environmental Engineering, Marine Science, Geophysics, Geomatics, Geography, or other related fields.
  • Familiar with software such as QGIS/ArcGIS, Excel, and preferably MATLAB or Python.
  • Strong interest in marine renewable energy, spatial modeling, and offshore infrastructure planning.
  • Committed to a full 6-month internship (remote, on-site, or hybrid as per supervisor’s direction).
  • Capable of working in a team and producing structured technical reports.
