TPO is very suitable for studying metal catalysts, for example those used for the oxidation of organic compounds. TPO provides a measure of the extent to which a catalyst can be re-oxidized. The most common analytical method involves the complete reduction of a sample of a metal catalyst or metal oxide and then heating it at a constant rate either in a steady stream of the oxidizing gas mixture or by pulses of the oxidizing gas mixture. The passage of the oxidizing gas (oxygen) mixture through the sample cell is measured by TCD, allowing the temperature at which the oxidized sample can be found.
