This internship focuses on analyzing the mooring system requirements for Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWT) based on site-specific marine environmental conditions. The student will study key parameters, including wave height, current velocity, wind speed, and seabed characteristics, in potential deployment areas. Using these environmental data, the student will identify suitable mooring configurations (e.g., catenary, taut-leg, or hybrid systems) and estimate design loads and safety factors. The goal is to ensure mooring stability, durability, and performance under various ocean conditions, providing technical support for the development of the FOWT Prototype (α).
Competencies to be Developed:
  • Understanding of mooring system fundamentals and offshore station-keeping strategies
  • Skills in interpreting marine environmental data and converting it into design parameters
  • Application of mooring analysis tools and simulation software (e.g., OrcaFlex, MOSES, or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of offshore wind energy infrastructure and its interaction with the ocean environment
  • Technical reporting and engineering analysis skills
Student Requirements:
  • Final-year undergraduate student in Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering
  • Completed coursework in Offshore Structures, Hydrodynamics, or Mooring Systems
  • Basic understanding of oceanographic data and marine loading conditions
  • Proficient in technical reading in English
  • Preferably has prior experience or interest in numerical simulation tools
  • Able to commit to a structured internship period and work independently or within a team
