This internship aims to conduct a comprehensive risk analysis of inland waterway transportation systems operating in river and lake environments across Indonesia. Students will assess a range of safety-related factors, including weather and environmental conditions, vessel design, operator behaviour, and small port and jetty infrastructure. The project will focus on hazard identification, risk assessment, and proposing mitigation strategies using technical and safety management approaches. The results are expected to contribute to the development of safety guidelines, supervision systems for inland transport, and data-driven technical and policy recommendations.
Competencies to be Developed:
  • Understanding of inland waterway transport safety systems (river and lake-based)
  • Application of risk analysis methods (FMEA, HAZOP, Risk Matrix)
  • Field data collection techniques and operational safety observations
  • Development of technical and policy recommendations based on safety assessments
  • Technical documentation and professional reporting of risks and mitigation strategies
  • Multidisciplinary teamwork and communication with local stakeholders (local governments, operators, communities)
Student Requirements:
  • Final-year undergraduate students from Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, Safety Engineering, Geography, or Urban & Regional Planning
  • Have completed coursework in Waterway Transport, Risk Analysis, or Infrastructure Management
  • Willing to conduct field surveys (if needed) and work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Capable of writing technical reports and communicating professionally
  • Preferably has a strong interest in public safety and inland water transport policy
Internship Duration and Credit Load:
  • Duration: 6 months (1 full academic semester)
  • Format: Applied research and field-based project (if feasible), guided by academic supervisors and institutional/industry mentors
Expected Outputs:
  • Final report on risk analysis of inland waterway transport safety in selected study areas
  • Risk matrix and classified risk mapping for operational activities
  • Technical and/or policy recommendations for improving transport safety
  • Scientific poster or presentation for a seminar/exhibition
  • (Optional) Draft academic article or policy brief for internal/external publication
