This internship focuses on the conceptual design and optimization of interconnecting net structures (or flexible bridges) linking multiple Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) as part of an integrated offshore platform system. This system is envisioned to not only function as a renewable wind energy source but also to support sustainable offshore aquaculture activities (such as fish, seaweed, or shellfish farming). The student will be involved in evaluating various net configurations and materials in terms of structural stability, hydrodynamic load response (from waves, currents, and wind), and suitability for aquaculture use. The design optimization process will also consider spatial efficiency, load distribution, and ease of deployment.
Competencies to be Developed:
  • Fundamentals of floating structural systems and inter-platform connectors
  • Analysis of dynamic loading in multi-functional marine platforms
  • Application of offshore engineering and integrated aquaculture system design
  • Use of design and simulation software (e.g., CAD, ANSYS AQWA, or OrcaFlex)
  • Skill development in integrating renewable energy infrastructure with sustainable ocean food production
Student Requirements:
  • Final-year undergraduate student from Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture, Civil Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering programs
  • Completed coursework in Marine Structures, Hydrodynamics, or Offshore Aquaculture (a combination is preferred)
  • Able to read and comprehend technical and academic literature in English
  • Familiar with or willing to learn relevant engineering software tools
  • Strong interest in innovative ocean-based solutions for renewable energy and food security
  • Able to work independently or collaboratively during the internship period
