Plankton (phytoplankton) are free-floating organisms that live, grow, and move with ocean currents. These free-floating organisms play an important role as primary producers and serve as energy transfer links, and factors that regulate biogeochemical cycles. Indonesia, with almost 60% of its territory covered by oceans, has a variety of planktonic species. However, one of the problems in ordinary planktonic studies is the lack of a fast and accurate method to identify and classify plankton types. Thus, the visual analytic method on microscopic images is used to overcome this problem. Identification follows two main steps, namely, detecting the location of plankton in the image and followed by recognition of the type of plankton. Activities are carried out over a period of two years. The first year focuses on collecting plankton (phytoplankton) datasets in several locations in Indonesian waters. The dataset is then used to develop a microscopic-scale visual data-based identification model. Mobile and web-based user interface prototypes will also be started in the first year. The second year of activities will focus on system testing and developing identification tools that can be used directly in the field. This activity will also provide research support to two DBR S3 BRIN students with topics related to plankton identification.
