Sontek ADP 500 KHz Description:
Sontek ADP (Acoustic Doppler Profiler) is a high-performance 3D water current profiler. It is accurate, reliable, and easy to use for a variety of applications such as hydrology, oceanography, and port monitoring.
ADP measures water velocity using a physical principle called the Doppler effect:
If a sound source is moving relative to a receiver, the frequency of the sound received will shift from the frequency at which it was transmitted.
In Doppler-based current meters, we observe the reflection of sound from particles in the water.
This frequency change is proportional to the water velocity.
ADP uses sophisticated transducers and electronics designed to reduce the side-lobe interference problems that are common in other current meters. This allows ADP to measure currents very close to the water's boundaries (surface or bottom).
ADP measures 3D current profiles as follows
• Each transducer produces a short sound pulse and measures the Doppler shift (velocity) with time.
• The velocity measured by each beam is called the beam velocity data, and is a projection of the 3D velocity onto the acoustic beam axis. • The three beam velocities are combined at each range cell to calculate the 3D velocity at that depth layer. The velocity data is in the Cartesian (XYZ) coordinate system relative to the ADP. • For many applications, the ADP includes an internal compass/tilt sensor to measure the orientation of the ADP. This allows the ADP to rotate the velocity data from the XYZ coordinate system to the Earth coordinate system (East-North-Up or ENU) regardless of the orientation of the ADP.
