Research Activity Description: Guidance for research activities on the thermal management system of Lithium battery circuits for applications in electric vehicles. The proposer joins the electric vehicle technology research group, Transportation Technology Research Center of BRIN.
Lithium batteries are one of the most popular energy sources for electric vehicles. Unfortunately, the performance of these batteries is greatly influenced by temperature. Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) is a key technology to ensure that battery modules/packs can operate at their optimal performance safely. BTMS research is oriented towards two things, namely the maximum allowable battery temperature and the thermal uniformity profile between battery cells. In addition, a reliable BTMS must also be able to protect drivers from safety risks when the battery experiences thermal runaway, for example due to an accident.
Available research sub-topic options include:
- Evaluation of material flammability under thermal runaway conditions
- Airflow optimization for active BTMS systems at low thermal loads
- Application of lightweight materials for passive/hybrid BTMS
