A dilatometer is a scientific instrument used to measure volume changes caused by physical or chemical processes. Dilatometers have a wide range of applications, including in the fields of materials science, chemistry, and geotechniques.
In the geotechnical field, dilatometers are used to measure soil geotechnical parameters, such as cohesion, internal friction angle, and shear modulus. This dilatometer test is carried out by injecting air into the soil under a certain pressure. Changes in soil volume that occur due to air injection are then measured to determine the values of the soil geotechnical parameters.
Dilatometer testing is an effective method for determining soil geotechnical parameters. This test can be done quickly and easily, and does not damage the soil. Therefore, dilatometer testing is widely used in various construction projects, such as building roads, bridges and dams.
