The analysis of ambergris is essential to verify its authenticity. Ambergris contains a variety of chemical compounds, including lipids, sterols, and other organic substances. As a rare and luxurious ingredient in perfumery, ambergris holds significant economic value. Therefore, thorough analysis is crucial to prevent counterfeiting and to ensure that its quality corresponds to its price—safeguarding both perfume manufacturers and consumers.

LC-HRMS (Liquid Chromatography–High Resolution Mass Spectrometry) enables the separation of complex mixtures present in ambergris into individual components, allowing for detailed analysis and identification. It separates these compounds based on their polarity and affinity to the stationary phase (chromatographic column), facilitating the identification of key substances such as ambrein—the main component—alongside other compounds through high-resolution mass spectrometry.
